Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to offload part of his ownership stake in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

The deal estimates the Mercedes team at £4.6bn – a record for a Formula 1 squad – after McLaren were valued at £3.5 billion in a change of corporate structure last September.

Wolff, who owns one-third of Mercedes F1, would sell a stake in the region of 5%.

Wolff, aged 53 would stay on as team principal and CEO if the sale goes through.

Shareholder Structure

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes-Benz and industrial group Ineos Group, who each also own one-third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson said: "We will be making no official statement on the matter. The management structure of Mercedes F1 will remain unaltered, and all three partners are fully committed to the ongoing success of Mercedes-Benz in F1."

Financial Increase

This arrangement signifies a substantial rise in worth of the Mercedes team since Ineos bought its share for £208m in 2022.

The rise demonstrates the growth in market values of F1 teams recently due to the increasing appeal of Formula 1 globally.

This was also seen in the box-office performance of the Formula 1 film featuring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which debuted last summer and earned more than $630 million (£458 million) at the box office.

It is the actor's top-grossing movie and the most successful sports movie ever released.

Current Performance

The Mercedes team are second in the constructors' championship, behind McLaren, with three races remaining this season.

Mercedes' primary racer British driver George Russell has won two of the 21 grands prix this year and is in fourth place in the drivers' championship behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes won a record eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven driver championships, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, between 2014 to 2021.
