Whenever a major awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a demand to include of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.
Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category during that awards season
- Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
- Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often small games, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
