Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
