In the early hours of Saturday morning, reports emerged of major explosions rocking Tehran, amid claims from Israel that it had carried out a preemptive strike.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were heard in the city on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were observed rising over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The type of these blasts suggests that this is a missile attack,” one news agency stated, though it did not initially provide additional information.
Background: Escalating Strains and Recent Events
The incident occurs against a backdrop of sharply increased tensions in the Middle East. Major events preceding this attack involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive buildup of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent discussions between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with indications of more talks scheduled.
- Public Statements: Before the attack, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered warnings regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or confront severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had accused the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. Officials dismissed claims about missile development and casualty figures as baseless.
These developments is fluid, with additional reports anticipated as the situation develops.
