Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
