The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
