Around 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, walls and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a statement.
Officers say they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.
The substance had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they reported.
Officers then located many other smeared cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials say preliminary tests suggest the fluid was probably human blood.
"There is still no clue as to its source; officials are presently not aware of any injuries in relation with the event," they added.
City officials said they were working "to solve the case" and have asked to the public for information.
An important representative stated the incident made him speechless and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the right-wing violent incident in 2020," he posted on social media, mentioning the death of nine people by a gunman focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
